Good Cave (Shpella e Mirë): A Mystical Retreat

Located in the village of Besh-Livadh, near Tirana, Good Cave (Shpella e Mirë besh), also known as Saint George's Cave (Shpella e Shëngjergjit) is a mesmerizing natural and spiritual site. Situated on Brrar Mountain, the cave is positioned at a considerable height, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape.Inside, the cave extends over 150 meters, with heights varying from 2 to 10 meters. It features a stunning array of stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. The cave is also home to several species of bats. According to local legends, the cave was once deeper but was damaged and partially closed, resulting in its current length. The end of the cave is closed with concrete from the 1980s.Good Cave is not only a geological wonder but also a place of pagan rituals and mixed faiths. It is called “good” because the water dripping inside is believed to have healing and magical powers. Visitors often collect this water in containers, drink it, or use it for bathing in hopes of curing diseases and warding off the “evil eye”. On Saint George's Day (May 5th and 6th), locals gather in the cave to spend the night, make sacrifices, and roast meat on a fire, blending different religious practices in one place. The cave has an elongated arched shape with several winding turns, and is rich with stalactites and stalagmites. The first stalactites at the entrance are shaped like an animal, called the 'guardian of the cave'.The area around Good Cave is ideal for mountain climbing and offers picturesque views of the Tirana River valley and the New Arbri Road. The trail to the cave is moderately challenging, with the last half being steep and rocky, making it suitable for experienced hikers.
