Discover more about Tirana Castle

Tirana Castle, or the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical landmark in the center of Tirana, Albania. Its history stretches back before 1300, with remnants from the Byzantine era. The castle's location was strategic, as it stood at the crossroads of the main east-west and north-south roads, forming the heart of Tirana. While not much of the original fortress remains above ground, a 6-meter (20 ft) high Ottoman-era wall, covered in vines, still stands. Recent excavations have uncovered wall foundations that have been incorporated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street. A mosaic commemorating Albania's 100th Anniversary of Independence has also been unveiled near the Albanian Parliament.Today, Tirana Castle is a vibrant hub where history and modernity meet. Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore various buildings, including restaurants serving traditional cuisine, hotels, and cultural institutions. Since December 2018, the castle has been open to visitors, showcasing the "Old Bazaar," a space that blends traditional handcraft stores with modern shops. The castle has undergone many changes throughout history. Originally built in the 11th century as part of the Byzantine Empire's defensive network, it was later adapted and strengthened by the Ottomans, who used it as a central defense point. In 1973, Tirana Castle was declared a monument of culture of the first category, and in 2008, the new tracks of walls were declared a cultural monument.
