Discover more about Kanina Castle

Kanina Castle, or Kalaja e Kaninës, stands as a majestic ruin overlooking the Bay of Vlora, approximately 6 kilometers southeast of the city center. The castle's origins trace back to the 3rd century BC when it served as a secured settlement for the Amantes, an Illyrian tribal community. Its strategic position, 380 meters above sea level on Mount Shushica, provided control over the Bay of Vlora and the surrounding region. Throughout its history, Kanina Castle has been associated with notable historical figures and significant events. It has borne witness to the dynamic interplay of cultures and powers, embodying resilience and endurance through centuries of upheaval. The castle has been a silent observer to the changing tides of empires and civilizations, from the Illyrians and Romans to the Byzantines and Ottomans. Each era has contributed to the architectural mosaic that defines the castle today. In the 4th century AD, the settlement was transformed into a castle town. The castle was reconstructed under Justinian I, Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, in the 6th century. In the 13th century, it served as a stronghold for the Angevin Kingdom of Albania. Later, during the 14th century, it came into the hands of the Principality of Valona (Vlorë), until 1417 when it was forcibly handed over to the Ottomans. The Ottomans recognized the castle's strategic importance, using it as a base to exert control over the surrounding territories and safeguard their interests in the region. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved walls and towers, remnants of ancient architecture and strategic fortifications that tell tales of battles fought and empires that once thrived in this region. The castle also boasts several walking paths and panoramic viewpoints that afford breathtaking views of Vlore and the surrounding landscape.
