Elbasan Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a captivating historical site in the heart of Elbasan, Albania. The castle's origins trace back to a Roman castrum called Mansio Scampis, constructed between 284 and 305 AD during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. This fortification was strategically positioned along the Via Egnatia, a crucial Roman road connecting the Adriatic coast to Byzantium.Over the centuries, the castle witnessed various periods of settlement and abandonment. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire, under Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, rebuilt the castle in 1466, transforming it into a garrison town. This reconstruction occurred during the conflict with the League of Lezhë, led by the Albanian hero Skanderbeg. The castle was then named Ijl-basan, which translates to 'the owned fortress,' eventually becoming Elbasan. For over four centuries, Elbasan served as the seat of the Sanjak of Elbasan, an Ottoman administrative division. The fortress was eventually dismantled in 1832 by Ottoman Grand Vizier Reşid Mehmed Pasha. Today, the castle is freely accessible and has evolved into a vibrant neighborhood where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present. Visitors can explore the remaining walls, particularly the south wall with its towers, and discover historical monuments like Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, King Mosque, and the Orthodox Church of St. Mary's Assumption.
