Discover more about Mosque of Ali Pasha

The Mosque of Ali Pasha, located in Ohrid, is believed to be among the first mosques constructed in North Macedonia, with its origins tracing back to the late 15th to early 16th century. This square-shaped mosque was built using stone and fired brick. In 1823, a madrasa was erected within the mosque complex, but it no longer exists. Remnants of a minaret can be found on the south side of the mosque. The minaret was demolished in 1912 and has not been rebuilt. Historical accounts suggest there may have been another minaret on the western side, possibly erected during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II (1481-1512). After more than 100 years, the mosque has been completely restored, and the minaret was renovated in 2019 with a donation from the Republic of Turkey and their Ministry of Culture. Today, the Mosque of Ali Pasha stands as a testament to Ohrid's diverse history and cultural blend, attracting tourists interested in exploring the city's Ottoman heritage.
