Discover more about Elbasan Castle

Elbasan Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a significant historical landmark in the city of Elbasan, Albania. This 15th-century fortress, rising 9 meters high, was constructed upon the foundations of Roman and Byzantine structures, with the original settlement dating back to the 4th century. The castle's history spans multiple eras, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped the region. Originally built as a Roman castrum during the reign of Emperor Diocletian between 284 and 305 AD and called Mansio Scampis, the fortress was strategically positioned along the Via Egnatia, a crucial Roman road connecting the Adriatic coast to Byzantium. After periods of settlement and decline, the castle was restored in 1466 by Sultan Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire, transforming it into a military garrison. The Ottomans named it Ijl-basan, meaning 'the owned fortress,' which evolved into Elbasan. Enclosed by 26 equidistant towers, the castle served as a center for Albanian nationalism, preserving the country's history, culture, and language. Within its walls, the Castle Neighborhood thrived, boasting over 900 shops that produced and exported leather, silk, and precious metals. Today, visitors can explore well-preserved monuments, including Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, St. Mary's Orthodox Church, the King's Mosque, and the Clock Tower. The castle's architecture showcases a blend of Ottoman, Italian, and communist influences, creating a unique tapestry of styles and historical narratives.
