Getting there

Public Transport

To reach Theth via public transport, begin by taking a bus from Tirana to Shkodër. Buses depart regularly from Tirana's Regional Bus Terminal – North and South, costing approximately 500 LEK and taking around 2 hours. Spend the night in Shkodër. The next morning, catch the 7:00 AM minivan from Shkodër to Theth. This minivan journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. It's recommended to book the minivan in advance through your accommodation or at the bus station in Shkodër. The minivan fare is around 1200 Lek (€12) per person.

Car

Driving to Theth requires a 4x4 vehicle due to the road conditions. From Tirana, drive to Shkodër (approximately 2 hours). The road from Shkodër to Theth is a mix of asphalt and dirt track, with the final hour being particularly challenging due to stones and potholes. Exercise caution, especially on the mountain roads. Note that during winter, the road to Theth may be inaccessible due to snow.

Theth, also known as Thethi, is a captivating mountain village tucked away within Theth National Park, in the Shkodër region of Albania. This isolated haven, cradled by the Shala Mountains, boasts unparalleled natural beauty and a tranquil atmosphere. Legend says that Theth was founded roughly 400 years ago by six brothers seeking refuge from the Ottoman invasion, who were trying to preserve their Catholic traditions. The village's neighborhoods still bear the names of these founding brothers.Visitors are drawn to Theth for its stunning landscapes, including the Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye, and the towering peaks that surround the village. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails ranging from leisurely walks to challenging multi-day treks. The iconic hike to Valbona Pass is a favorite, offering breathtaking views of the Albanian Alps. The village itself exudes a picturesque charm, with traditional stone houses and a welcoming community.Historically, Theth faced challenges due to its isolation and political shifts. However, with growing tourism and support for local guesthouses, Theth has experienced a revival, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into traditional Albanian mountain life. The best time to visit Theth is during the shoulder season (May-June or September-October) to avoid the peak season crowds and enjoy pleasant weather.
