Himara Castle, or Kalaja e Himares, is a captivating historical site located approximately 2.5 kilometers north of modern Himarë, Albania. This ancient fortress, also referred to as Babakus, stands as a testament to the region's long and storied past, with evidence of settlement dating back 3,500 years to the time of the Chaonians. The castle's strategic location on a rocky hill, about 240 meters above sea level, provides breathtaking panoramic views. From its walls, visitors can gaze upon Livadhi Beach and the Ionian Sea to the west, with Corfu visible on the horizon. To the south, the modern town of Himarë unfolds, while the Visha and Kole Midhari Canyons and the Ceraunian Mountains offer spectacular vistas in other directions. Throughout its history, Himara Castle has been a vital stronghold, changing hands numerous times and undergoing several destructions and restorations. In the 8th century, it became the center of the Bishopric of Himara. Though largely abandoned by the 16th century in favor of the coastal area, the castle retains its historical charm with cobbled streets, inhabited and ruined houses, and beautiful churches like the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus and the Church of Saint Mary Kasopitra. Today, Himara Castle invites visitors to explore its ruins, wander its cobbled streets, and soak in the atmosphere of a bygone era. The blend of history, stunning views, and the slow revival of the old town make it a unique and unforgettable destination on the Albanian Riviera.
