Getting There

Walking

From the Kassiopi harbor or village center, the castle is easily accessible on foot. Follow the main road inland, away from the harbor. Look for signs directing you towards the castle. The path is a narrow, cobblestone walkway that winds uphill through village houses. The walk is moderately steep and takes approximately 10-15 minutes from the center. There are no entrance fees or mandatory access costs.
Public Transport

If arriving by bus from Corfu Town , disembark at the Kassiopi bus stop. From the bus stop, walk towards the village center and harbor. Then, follow the walking directions to the castle, as described above. Bus tickets from Corfu Town to Kassiopi cost approximately €3-€5. Payment for tickets inside the buses is made ONLY with cash!
Taxi

Taxis can drop you off near the entrance of the village. From there, follow the walking directions to the castle. A taxi from Corfu Town to Kassiopi costs approximately €35-€45 and takes around 40 minutes. A taxi from the Airport to Kassiopi will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Kassiopi Castle, perched on the northeastern coast of Corfu, stands as a testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. Overlooking the charming village of Kassiopi, this ancient fortress offers visitors a unique blend of historical intrigue and stunning natural beauty. Originally built during the Byzantine era, possibly in the 6th century AD, Kassiopi Castle was one of three key defensive structures protecting Corfu before the Venetian period. Together with Gardiki and Angelokastro, it formed a defensive triangle, safeguarding the island from invaders. Its strategic location, overseeing the Corfu Channel, made it a vital point for controlling sea passage. Throughout its history, the castle has seen numerous conquerors and suffered significant damage. It was captured by the Normans in 1081, later reclaimed by Byzantine forces, and eventually fell under Angevin rule in 1267. In 1386, the Venetians took control, but not without resistance. The Venetians, fearing the castle could be used against them, ordered its destruction. Despite being rebuilt in the 18th century, it was eventually abandoned. Today, Kassiopi Castle stands in a state of ruin, yet it continues to captivate visitors with its imposing stone walls and panoramic views. The castle grounds, now filled with olive trees, offer a tranquil space to explore the remnants of towers, ramparts, and the main gate. Walking along the perimeter, one can admire the architectural details and imagine the lives of those who once defended this strategic stronghold. Visiting Kassiopi Castle is free, and the walk to the castle leads through a narrow cobblestone path, offering glimpses of the village houses and surrounding landscapes. The views from the castle are particularly rewarding, with vistas of the Ionian Sea and the Albanian coastline.
