Walking

From the center of Saranda, begin at the waterfront promenade and walk up Rruga Skenderbeu. This road leads uphill towards the castle. The walk takes approximately 20-30 minutes and offers views of the coastline. Be prepared for a steep path in some sections. There are no costs associated with walking.

Public Transport

From the main bus terminal in Saranda, take a local bus heading towards Lëkurësi Castle. The buses are frequent and typically cost around 1 EUR for a one-way trip. Inform the driver of your destination. The bus will drop you off near the entrance, followed by a short walk. The total cost is approximately 1 EUR.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Saranda. A taxi ride to Kalaja e Lëkurësit takes approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. The taxi will drop you off at the base of the castle, from where you can walk to the entrance. Expect to pay around 5-7 EUR for the ride.

Driving

From the center of Saranda, head northwest on Rruga Skenderbeu. Continue straight until you reach the junction with Rruga Butrinti, where you will see signs for Kalaja e Lëkurësit. Turn left onto Rruga Butrinti and follow it. There is a small parking area near the entrance. Parking may cost around 2-3 EUR.

Overview

Lëkurësi Castle (Kalaja e Lëkurësit) is perched on a strategic hill overlooking Sarandë, offering visitors a unique blend of history, stunning views, and Albanian hospitality. Constructed in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, the castle was built to defend against the Venetians and control the harbor of Saranda and the road to Butrint. The castle housed a garrison of around 220 soldiers.The castle's almost square shape features two round towers at opposite corners, with loopholes found throughout. The best-preserved sections are the southern and eastern sides. From its elevated position, the castle provides sweeping views of Saranda, the Ionian Sea, and the islands of Ksamil.Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore the remnants of ancient structures and ruins. A highlight is the Restorant Kalaja e Lekuresit, which offers traditional Albanian cuisine and a sprawling outdoor terrace. The restaurant is a popular spot to enjoy a meal or drinks, especially during sunset. The castle is also known to host occasional traditional folk music and dance performances.To reach the castle, travelers can walk from the city center, take a local bus, or drive. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes uphill from the waterfront promenade. The castle is open daily, and exploring the surrounding area offers a chance to experience the vibrant local culture of Sarandë.
