Discover more about Vila Antike e Çukë

Vila Antike e Çukë, located in the village of Çukë, a few kilometers from Sarandë, presents the ruins of an ancient fortified residence, offering a window into Albania's rich history. The site, also known as Xhumbarë, features the remains of a fortified courtyard constructed with trapezoidal blocks. At its center stands a rectangular structure, approximately 12 meters wide, with internal stairs suggesting a two-story building. Archaeological findings suggest that the site dates back to the second half of the 3rd century BC. Initially interpreted as a military structure, recent studies indicate that Vila Antike e Çukë was likely a fortified farm, possibly owned by a wealthy citizen, serving an economic rather than a defensive function. The location offers sweeping views of the Ionian Sea, making it a scenic spot for photography and a peaceful escape. Traces of embrasures indicate that lighting was provided through them, while nine ascending steps lead to the second floor of the house, which must have been organized in the same way as the first floor. The beginnings of life on Çuka hill date back to the early Bronze Age. Its construction as an ancient dwelling testifies to its importance as an important settlement.
