Discover more about Et'hem Bej Mosque

Rising gracefully amid central Tirana's mix of architectural styles, the Et'hem Bey Mosque stands as an 18th-century icon narrating themes of Albanian identity. More than just Tirana's best-preserved relic of 500 years of Ottoman rule, this spiritual sanctuary speaks of the country's extraordinary endurance against swirling tides of change through its very structure. Construction began in the late 18th century (around 1791) by Molla Bey and was finished in 1821 by his son, Haxhi Et'hem Bey. The mosque is known for the intricate frescoes found both outside and inside the portico, which depict trees, waterfalls, and bridges – motifs rarely seen in Islamic art. These unique paintings set the Et'hem Bey Mosque apart, as Islamic tradition typically avoids figurative artwork. The mosque's history is intertwined with Albania's struggle for religious freedom. Closed during the communist era, it was reopened in 1991 when 10,000 people gathered to attend a service without the permission of the authorities, marking a turning point in Albanian religious freedom. Today, the mosque consists of an architectural complex together with the Clock Tower of Tirana. Visitors are welcome daily, though not during prayer service, and are required to remove their shoes before entering. The mosque holds regular prayers, and during Islamic holidays like Ramadan and Eid, it becomes a focal point for celebrations.
