Tepelena Castle, located in the town of Tepelena, is a historical landmark with origins tracing back to a Byzantine defensive tower in the 7th century. Its strategic importance was recognized and further developed by the Ottomans in the 15th century after they destroyed the old Byzantine fortification. The castle saw its most significant transformation in the early 19th century under Ali Pasha of Tepelena, an Albanian ruler within the Ottoman Empire.Born in Tepelena, Ali Pasha rebuilt the castle in 1819, expanding it into a sprawling complex of 4-5 hectares with three entrances and three towers. Until 1820, it served as his second residence and a vital strategic stronghold. The castle's walls were constructed to conform to the natural terrain, resulting in an irregular shape. The eastern gate bears the inscription "The gate of Vezir". Inside the castle, various buildings once stood, including barracks, magazines, religious structures, and a prison.Lord Byron, during his Grand Tour in 1809, famously met Ali Pasha here, immortalizing him in his poem *Childe Harold's Pilgrimage*. Today, Tepelena Castle is a captivating tourist destination. Visitors can explore the remnants of the ancient walls and towers, reflecting a blend of Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Vjosa River valley and distant mountain ranges.
