Discover more about Tepelena Castle

Tepelena Castle, located in the town of Tepelena, is a historical landmark with a rich and complex past. The castle's origins can be traced back to a Byzantine defensive tower in the 7th century. Its strategic location, where the Drino and Vjosa valleys meet, made it a crucial site for defense and control. The Ottomans further developed the site in the 15th century after destroying the old Byzantine fortification. However, the castle's most significant transformation occurred in the early 19th century under Ali Pasha of Tepelena, an Albanian ruler within the Ottoman Empire. Born in Tepelena, Ali Pasha rebuilt the castle in 1819, expanding it into a sprawling complex of 4-5 hectares with three entrances and three towers. Until 1820, it served as his second residence and a vital strategic stronghold. The castle's walls were constructed to conform to the natural terrain, resulting in an irregular shape. The eastern gate bears the inscription "The gate of Vezir". Inside the castle, various buildings once stood, including barracks, magazines, religious structures, and a prison. One of the most important buildings was the palace of Ali Pasha, where Lord Byron famously met him in 1809. Byron immortalized Ali Pasha in his poem *Childe Harold's Pilgrimage*, bringing fame to the castle and the region. Today, Tepelena Castle is a captivating tourist destination. Visitors can explore the remnants of the ancient walls and towers, reflecting a blend of Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Vjosa River valley and distant mountain ranges. Though much of the historical buildings were destroyed in the early 20th century due to earthquakes and war, the site remains a powerful symbol of Albania's cultural and historical heritage. The area inside the castle is now a residential area with houses and can be visited for free.
