Overview
Located in the village of Petrelë, a short drive from Tirana, Petrela Castle stands as a testament to Albania's rich heritage. Strategically positioned 329 meters above sea level, the castle was part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles. The castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, though the structure seen today largely dates from the 15th century. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister. The castle has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy views of the Erzen valley, hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains.
