Petrelë Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Petrelës, is a captivating historical site located in the village of Petrelë, a short distance south of Tirana. The castle's origins trace back to Late Antiquity, with foundations believed to have been laid in the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Its strategic position, 329 meters (1,079 feet) above sea level, provided a commanding view of the surrounding Erzen valley, hills, and olive groves.While the initial construction dates back centuries, the present structure largely reflects a 15th-century rebuilding. In 1445, Karl Muzaka Thopia, the lord of Petrelë, married Mamica Kastrioti, sister of the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, Mamica Kastrioti commanded the castle. Petrelë Castle formed a crucial part of a signaling and defense network with Krujë Castle, communicating via fires to warn of approaching danger.Today, Petrelë Castle is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance and panoramic views. A restaurant operates within the castle, offering a unique dining experience amidst the ancient stones. The castle's triangular shape and two observation towers add to its charm, providing stunning vistas of the landscape. Legend says that a beautiful girl named Elena once lived in the castle and is still waiting for her love to return.
