Discover more about Castle of Kruja

Kruja Castle, or Kalaja e Krujës, stands as a powerful symbol of Albanian resilience and national identity. Nestled on a hill overlooking the city of Krujë, about 25 km north of Tirana, the castle offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valley, Tirana, and the Adriatic Sea. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Albanian people's fight for independence, particularly during the 15th century when it became the epicenter of resistance against the Ottoman Empire led by the national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. The castle dates back to the 5th or 6th century, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the 3rd century AD. Skanderbeg, initially educated as an Ottoman hostage, defected and seized Kruja Castle, transforming it into an impenetrable stronghold that withstood three major Ottoman sieges in 1450, 1466, and 1467. Despite Ottoman forces conquering vast areas, they could not break the castle's defenses, a testament to Skanderbeg's military prowess and the unwavering spirit of his people. Today, Kruja Castle is one of the most visited historical sites in Albania. Within its walls, visitors can explore the Skanderbeg Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits detailing his life and battles. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in a traditional 18th-century family home, offers insights into Albanian life and culture during Ottoman rule. The castle complex also includes the remains of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih mosque and the Dollma Tekke, a Bektashi place of worship, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Albania's history. As you approach the castle, you'll pass through the Old Bazaar of Kruja, a charming market filled with souvenir shops, handicrafts, and local products. The bazaar offers a glimpse into the town's vibrant atmosphere and provides an opportunity to purchase unique mementos of your visit. Exploring Kruja Castle is a journey through Albanian history, courage, and cultural heritage, offering breathtaking views and a chance to experience the magic of this iconic landmark.
