Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana stands as a powerful symbol of Albania's complex history and its ongoing transformation. Originally constructed in 1988 as a museum to commemorate Enver Hoxha, the country's long-time communist leader, the Pyramid quickly became a controversial landmark. Designed by Hoxha's daughter and son-in-law, the structure was said to be the most expensive individual building ever constructed in Albania at the time. Following the collapse of communism in 1991, the Pyramid shed its original function and was repurposed several times, serving as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a base for NATO during the Kosovo War. For a time, it was also a nightclub and broadcasting station, before falling into disrepair. Its uncertain future led to debates about whether to demolish it, but public protests ultimately saved the structure. In 2018, a new vision for the Pyramid emerged: to transform it into a youth IT center for Creative Technologies, known as TUMO Center Tirana. This ambitious project, completed in May 2023, reimagined the Pyramid as an "open sculpture" within a new park. Designed by the architectural firm MVRDV, the renovated Pyramid features staircases along its sloping facades, allowing visitors to climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Colorful boxes scattered around the structure house cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms, creating a dynamic space for learning and innovation. Today, the Pyramid of Tirana stands as a testament to Albania's ability to adapt and reinvent itself, preserving its complex history while embracing a brighter future.
