Discover more about Castle of Kruja

Kruja Castle, located in the city of Kruje, Albania, is a significant historical site that embodies the country's spirit of resistance and cultural heritage. The castle dates back to the 5th or 6th century and is most famous for being the center of Skanderbeg's rebellion against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbej, known as Skanderbeg, was an Albanian nobleman and military commander who defied the Ottomans and became a national hero. Skanderbeg initially served as a hostage in the Ottoman court but later defected and seized Kruja Castle using a forged letter from the Sultan. The castle's strategic location and Skanderbeg's military skills allowed a small army to withstand three major Ottoman sieges in 1450, 1466 and 1467. The castle's defense was so strong that even after the Ottomans conquered Constantinople and the Balkans, they could not break through. Today, visitors can explore the castle grounds, which are open 24/7, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea. Inside the castle, you'll find several museums and other points of interest. The Skanderbeg Museum is dedicated to the life and military achievements of Skanderbeg, showcasing artifacts and exhibits from his time. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in a typical Ottoman-era house dating from 1764, offers insights into traditional Albanian life and culture. Other notable sites within the castle complex include the remains of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih mosque and the Dollma Tekke, a Bektashi place of worship.
