Located 2.5 kilometers north of modern Himara, this ancient fortress stands on a rocky hill approximately 240 meters above sea level, providing panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding landscape. The castle's origins trace back to the 4th-3rd century BC when the Greek tribe of the Chaonians inhabited the area. The settlement was fortified from the 8th century BC and was first mentioned in writing by the Roman author Pliny in the first century. Over the centuries, Himara Castle has been a strategic point for various rulers and empires, including the Byzantines and Ottomans. The castle was inhabited until the 16th century when it started to be abandoned in favor of the area downhill near the Port of Himara. Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore a network of small cobbled streets, some inhabited and some partly ruined. Among the ruins are several interesting churches, including the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus and the Church of St. Mary Kasopitra.
