Discover more about Church of Notre Dame of Africa

The Basilica of Notre Dame of Africa, or Notre-Dame d'Afrique, is a captivating basilica that stands as a symbol of unity and religious harmony in Algiers. Construction began in 1858 and was completed in 1872, the vision of Charles Lavigerie, Archbishop of Algiers, who sought to create a space that would represent both Christian faith and reconciliation between different communities. The basilica's design, by architect Jean Eugène Fromageau, is a unique blend of Roman, Byzantine, and Moorish architectural styles. The exterior is characterized by its white facade, large central dome, and two bell towers. Inside, visitors can admire the colorful mosaics, stained glass windows, and religious artwork that adorn the space. The basilica's atypical floor plan places the choir on the southeast side, deviating from the traditional east-facing orientation. Located on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers, the basilica offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding city. An inscription in French, Arabic, and Berber on the apse wall reads: “Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims,” encapsulating the basilica's message of interfaith harmony. For over 150 years, both Christians and Muslims have visited this sacred place. The basilica also holds historical significance, reflecting the French colonial period in Algeria and the growth of the Catholic community.
