The Basilica of Notre Dame of Africa, or Basilique Notre Dame d'Afrique, is a Catholic basilica in Algiers, Algeria. More than just a religious site, it's a beacon of cultural exchange and a place of historical significance. The basilica's construction, initiated by Archbishop Charles Lavigerie in 1855, was completed in 1872, rising from the hill of Bologhine (formerly Saint-Eugène). Its location offers visitors panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The basilica's design, a blend of Romanesque and Byzantine influences by architect Jean-Eugène Fromageau, distinguishes it from typical churches, with the choir unusually situated on the southeast side. Inside, 46 stained glass windows cast colored light, creating a serene atmosphere. The apse bears an inscription in French, Arabic, and Berber: “Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims,”. This reflects the basilica's role as a sanctuary for people of different faiths. Throughout its history, Notre Dame of Africa has faced challenges, including damage from bombings in 1943 and the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake. However, dedicated restoration efforts have preserved its beauty and significance. Today, the basilica hosts daily mass and various cultural events, welcoming visitors to experience its spiritual ambiance and architectural grandeur.
