The design mirrors the douérate style of the ancient Casbah, featuring a labyrinth of small rooms arranged with a foqani (first tier) and a basement. In 1843, the palace was renovated and became the property of Ahmed Ben Mohamed Ben Zouaoui. Later, it passed into the hands of Hafiz Dahmane Ben Ahmed, a Turkish dignitary, and eventually to the Lung family, who were winegrowers from France. In 1954, the widow Lung bequeathed the palace to the Red Cross. Before becoming home to the writer Mouloud Feraoun until his assassination in 1962. The palace spans 5.25 hectares, including a palace, garden, stables, outbuildings, a fountain, water jets, and a pool. Today, Palais Djenane Lakhdar is undergoing restoration to preserve its architectural and historical significance.
