Discover more about Dar Khedaoudj el Amia

Dar Khedaoudj el Amia, a striking monument within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Casbah of Algiers, provides an essential insight into the lives of women in Algiers during the Ottoman period. The palace is located on Rue Mohamed Akli Malek in the Souk-el-Djemaa district. Built in 1570 by Yahia Rais, an officer of the Algerian fleet, the palace later became the home of Khedaoudj, the daughter of Dey. Legend says that Khedaoudj feigned blindness to avoid being seen by the Dey of Algiers and becoming part of his harem. Whether fact or folklore, the story adds to the intrigue of the house. The building exemplifies traditional Algerian architecture, with characteristic arches and courtyards. As you wander through its rooms and courtyards, you can almost hear the echoes of the women who once lived within its walls. In 1830, after the French conquest, it served as Algiers' first town hall. Transformed into the Museum of Popular Arts in 1961, it was designated a national museum in 1987. Today, the Palais Khedaoudj el Amia houses the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, displaying traditional Algerian crafts, including collections of regional carpets and pottery.
