Sacred Heart Cathedral: A Symbol of Faith and Architecture

The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers, located in the Sidi M'Hamed district, is a significant religious and architectural landmark. Construction began in 1944, commissioned by Bishop Leynaud, as a vow of gratitude for Algeria's protection during World War II. The cathedral was completed in 1956 and consecrated in 1963, becoming the new cathedral after the Cathedral of Saint Philip was converted into the Ketchaoua Mosque.The cathedral's design, by architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur with engineer René Sarger, reflects modernist principles inspired by the Gospel of John. The structure spans 52 meters in length and 35 meters in width, dominated by a central tower. Inside, a peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by unique features, including a small organ from Boufarik and a mosaic from the Roman basilica of Castellum Tingitanum (present-day Chlef) dating back to 324 CE. The altar, made of Carrara marble, houses relics of African saints.The cathedral's neo-Gothic and Byzantine styles are showcased through intricate stained-glass windows that fill the interior with colorful light.
