Discover more about The Great Mosque

Djamaa el Kebir, or the Great Mosque of Algiers, is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Situated in the Casbah, near the harbor, this mosque has been a central place of worship for over nine centuries. Founded in 1097 during the Almoravid dynasty, the mosque's original design reflects Almoravid architectural principles, characterized by its naves perpendicular to the qibla wall and a rectangular courtyard. Over the centuries, the mosque has seen several additions and reconstructions. A minaret was added in 1332 by the Zayyanid sultan Abu Tashfin I. The mosque suffered severe damage during the French bombardment of Algiers in the 17th century, leading to the reconstruction of the mihrab and qibla wall. A portico of columns and poly-lobed arches was added during the French colonial period. The prayer hall is divided by pillars and horseshoe arches into eleven naves, each covered by double sloping roofs. The mihrab, though reconstructed, features two small spiral columns, a characteristic of 18th-century Algiers. While the minbar is now housed in the National Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Arts in Algiers, the rails that once moved it remain in the floor. Today, the Great Mosque of Algiers stands as a symbol of the city's enduring Islamic identity and architectural evolution. Visitors can appreciate its blend of Almoravid design and later influences, as well as its historical significance as one of Algeria's oldest mosques.
