Discover more about Fontaine Aïn-El-Acir

Fontaine Aïn-El-Acir, translated as the 'Fountain of the Captive,' is a historical landmark located in the Caroubier district of Annaba. Situated below the Casbah (citadel) and 600 meters from the sea, it overlooks the ravine of the Lever de l'Aurore beach. Believed to have been constructed in the 18th century, the fountain's rococo style reflects a European artistic and architectural trend from 1700-1790. It is rumored to be the work of a European captive, a common practice in Ottoman policy. During the French period, it was mistakenly called 'the Roman fountain'. Today, it stands as the last of four monumental fountains from the Ottoman era in Annaba. The fountain showcases a blend of Moorish and Greek styles, featuring both the beauty of Moorish earthenware and white Greek marble. In the past, the fountain was essential to the water supply system, managed by a designated official called 'Caïd El Ayoune'. This official oversaw the maintenance and operation of the fountains in the Sanjak Bleb El Anneb (Annaba). The fountain marked the first stop for French soldiers landing in March 1832 and served as a strategic military passage to the Casbah. In the 20th century, it became a place for relaxation and school visits.
