Ras El Hamra Lighthouse

Ras El Hamra Lighthouse, also known as Phare Ras El Hamra, stands as a beacon of history and hope in the Algerian port city of Annaba. Constructed in 1850, this lighthouse isn't just a navigational aid; it's a landmark steeped in local lore and offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The 17.5-meter-high red brick tower is built on a mountaintop, providing a stunning vista of the bay.The name 'Ras El Hamra' translates to 'Red Cape' in Arabic, derived from the reddish hue of the rock upon which it stands. Legend has it that this rock conceals a natural spring called 'The Source of the Sultan's Daughter,' said to be guarded by the princess's benevolent spirit and possessing magical properties. The water, with its unique sweet and salty taste, is believed to grant blessings and fulfill the wishes of those with kind hearts.Throughout its history, the lighthouse has undergone several modernizations. Originally using mineral oil, the lamps were switched to vegetable oil in 1880 and electrified in 1902. Today, the lighthouse's powerful lantern illuminates an area of 54 km, with flashes of white light every five seconds. Visitors come bearing offerings, seeking 'Barakat,' a blessing for healing or before facing a challenge.
