Discover more about Porte Sarasine

Porte Sarasine, also known as Bab el Bhar (Gate of the Sea), is a historic monument in the coastal city of Béjaïa, Algeria. It is considered one of the oldest preserved gates in the Maghreb region. Constructed in the mid to late 11th century by the Hammadids, during the reign of An-Nasir, it served as one of six gates in Béjaïa's defensive wall. As its name suggests, Porte Sarasine was originally the maritime entrance to Béjaïa. Small ships and boats would pass through its grand arch to access the city's port. The gate's architecture reflects the techniques used by the Hammadids, featuring a broken arch made of radiating brick layers resting on horizontal brick layers and stone imposts. A semicircular relieving arch tops the gate, distributing the wall's weight. Today, much of the gate is buried, making it difficult to determine its original height. However, it's estimated that the opening was approximately 10 meters high and 6 meters wide. Porte Sarasine stands as a reminder of Béjaïa's strategic importance and rich cultural heritage, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and imagine the bustling maritime activity that once passed through its arch.
