Discover more about Bab El Kantra Bridge

Bab El Kantra Bridge, an emblem of Constantine, Algeria, is more than just a crossing; it's a journey through time. As the city's oldest bridge, it has witnessed centuries of Constantine's transformations. Originally built by the Romans, destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, it took its better form between 1771 and 1792 under the rule of Salah Bey, who entrusted its reconstruction to the Balearic builder Bartolomeo, who used stones from the ancient Roman amphitheater. Over the years, Bab El Kantra has morphed from a Roman-style multi-arch bridge to an Ottoman-style bridge in 1792, then to a French iron arch in 1863, and finally to the concrete arch bridge that stands today. The bridge was Constantine's main access route and the site of main assaults on the city. The district near the bridge is called Bab El Kantara in Arabic, which means 'the bridge door', because the bridge was indeed closed by a door. Today, Bab El Kantra Bridge provides a vital connection and panoramic views of the Rhumel River gorge. Partial remains of the earlier stone bridges can still be seen. Walking across the bridge allows you to appreciate the ingenuity that went into its construction. The dynamic play of light on the stone structure during sunset creates a magical ambiance.
