Discover more about Grande Mosquée de Constantine

The Grande Mosquée de Constantine, or Djamaa El Kebir, is a captivating historical mosque nestled in the heart of Constantine's ancient medina. Its origins trace back to 1135 AD when the Hammadid dynasty, under the rule of Yahya ibn Abd al-Aziz, constructed it. This Berber dynasty, a branch of the Sanhaja Berbers, ruled Algeria from 1014 to 1152. The mosque has undergone numerous expansions and renovations throughout its long history, including significant work during the Ottoman era in 1766 and the French occupation of Algeria. The most recent restoration was completed in 2017, ensuring the preservation of this historical treasure.Built on the ruins of a Roman temple, the Grande Mosquée incorporates salvaged ancient shafts and capitals, many of which are Corinthian in style. Notably, the columns adjacent to the mihrab retain their original positions from the Roman temple. The mihrab itself features a half-dome and an arch with interlaced lobes, showcasing Fatimid art influences. The mosque's design also reflects the urban renovations carried out during the French occupation in the mid-19th century, with the minaret and facade dating back to this period.Today, the Grande Mosquée de Constantine stands as a testament to the city's layered history and enduring Islamic faith. It serves not only as a place of worship but also as a significant architectural landmark, drawing visitors to admire its blend of Roman, Islamic, and Ottoman influences.
