The Monument aux Morts is a significant historical site in Constantine, Algeria, commemorating the city's sons who died during World War I (1914-1918). The monument stands at the entrance of a renowned suspension bridge, offering visitors a panoramic view of Constantine. The monument's design was entrusted to the architectural firm of Marcel Dumoulin and Maurice de La Chapelle. The first stone was laid on November 18, 1918, and construction took 12 years. It was inaugurated on May 7, 1930, during the centenary of French Algeria, by French President Gaston Doumergue. The monument is based on the Roman Arch of Trajan in Timgad, Algeria. At the top of the arch stands a statue of Victory by sculptor Ebstein, a reproduction of a Roman statue discovered in the Casbah of Constantine. More than 800 soldiers—Muslims, Christians, and Jews from Constantine—have their names engraved on bronze plaques. A semicircular terrace offers a panoramic view of the Rhumel valley. The monument is a place of reflection, offering visitors a chance to consider the sacrifices made for freedom and peace.
