Palais du Bey: A Glimpse into Ottoman Algeria

The Palais du Bey, or Ahmed Bey Palace, stands as a magnificent testament to Constantine's rich history and cultural heritage. Constructed between 1826 and 1835 by the last Ottoman Bey of Constantine, El Hadj Ahmed Bey, the palace served as his official residence. The palace also features 540 cedar wood doors, each inscribed and engraved with different sculptures and decorations. After the French occupation in 1837, the palace served as a French military headquarters and underwent several modifications. It was later used by the Algerian military after independence. Restoration efforts began in the 1980s, and in 2009, the Palais du Bey opened to the public as a museum of arts and popular traditions. Today, it stands as a symbol of Constantine's past and a must-see destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in Algeria's Ottoman history.
