Opened in 1982 on the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence, it commemorates those who lost their lives fighting for freedom from French colonial rule.Designed by Algerian architect Bachir Yellès, with contributions from Polish engineers Marian Konieczny and Piotr Kowalski, the memorial takes the form of three stylized palm leaves soaring skyward. These leaves symbolize the country's growth and resilience, uniting mid-height and reaching 92 meters (302 feet). At the base of each leaf stands a statue of a soldier, representing a distinct stage of Algeria's fight for independence: colonialism, revolution, and post-independence. An eternal flame burns in the center, honoring the martyrs' memory.The memorial is located on a hill in the El Madania district, offering panoramic views of Algiers and the Mediterranean Sea. The site includes a museum (the Museum of the Mujahid), crypt, and amphitheater, providing cultural and educational context to Algeria's history.
