Botanical Garden Hamma: Algiers' Green Oasis

The Botanical Garden Hamma, also known as Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, is a 32-hectare (79-acre) botanical garden located in the Mohamed Belouizdad district of Algiers. Established in 1832 by French colonial authorities, it was initially created to acclimate plant species from around the world to Algeria's Mediterranean climate. Over time, it has grown into a renowned botanical center, blending scientific discovery with public enjoyment.The garden is divided into several distinct sections, including a French garden with symmetrical designs, an English landscape area with winding paths, and experimental test garden areas. Visitors can explore diverse plant collections, including rare specimens from different continents. The garden also features historic fountains, a mini zoo, and a fine art museum, providing a multifaceted experience.Throughout its history, the Botanical Garden Hamma has played a significant role in Algerian agriculture and culture. It served as an agricultural university in 1930 and was listed as a national natural heritage site in 1947. The garden faced challenges during World War II and the Algerian civil war but was rehabilitated and reopened in 2009. Today, it hosts educational programs and welcomes over 900,000 visitors each year. The garden also gained fame as a filming location for the 1932 Tarzan movie.
