Djamaa el Kebir, or the Great Mosque of Algiers, is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural evolution. Founded in 1097 during the Almoravid dynasty, under the reign of Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf, it is considered the oldest mosque in Algiers and one of the oldest in Algeria. Its design has served as a model for religious architecture throughout the Maghreb region. The mosque's structure features naves perpendicular to the qibla wall and a rectangular courtyard bordered by galleries. The minaret, added in 1332 by the Zayyanid sultan Abu Tashfin I, rises from the northwestern corner. The mosque has undergone several restorations, including the reconstruction of the mihrab and qibla wall following damage from French bombardments in the 17th century. A gallery was added to the exterior in 1840 during French colonial rule. The prayer hall is divided into eleven aisles, supported by horseshoe arches and masonry pillars. The mihrab, though reconstructed, features elements of 18th-century Algerian design, including small spiral columns and stucco relief. The minbar, originally mobile via rails, is now housed in the National Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Arts in Algiers.Located in the historic Casbah district near the harbor, the Great Mosque stands as a symbol of Algerian religious and cultural heritage. It is a must-see for visitors seeking to understand the country's architectural and spiritual legacy.
