Ighzer Amellal (Abiod River Valley)

Ighzer Amellal, translating to 'White River', is a breathtaking canyon sculpted by the Abiod River over centuries in the Batna Province of Algeria. Situated within the Aures Mountains, near the village of Ghoufi, this canyon, also called the Ghoufi Canyon, stretches for 3 to 4 kilometers and presents a remarkable landscape of towering cliffs, ancient cave dwellings, and vibrant oases. The canyon's most striking feature is the 'Balconies of Ghoufi,' where traditional Berber homes are carved into the rock face, some dating back four centuries. These troglodyte dwellings, inhabited until the 1970s, offer a glimpse into the region's unique architectural heritage and the ingenious ways the local communities adapted to the environment. The visible geological layers on the canyon slopes provide insight into the area's geological history.
