Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers

The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers, located in the Sidi M'Hamed district, is a remarkable Roman Catholic church. Construction began in 1944, commissioned by Bishop Leynaud, and was completed in 1956, becoming the capital's new cathedral after the Cathedral of Saint Philip was reconverted into the Ketchaoua Mosque. Consecrated in 1963, it stands as the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Algiers.The cathedral's design, by architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur with engineer René Sarger, embodies modernist architectural principles inspired by the Gospel of John. The central tower is a key feature, and the structure measures 52 meters in length and 35 meters in width. Inside, a peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by a small organ and a historic mosaic dating back to 324 CE. The altar, carved from Carrara marble, houses relics of African saints.The cathedral's architecture blends neo-Gothic and Byzantine styles, with intricate stained-glass windows casting colorful light.
