    Discover more about Lejdar

Lejdar, located in the Medroussa region of Algeria, is an archaeological site containing thirteen Berber mausoleums that date back to late antiquity, specifically the 4th to 7th centuries CE. The name 'Lejdar' is derived from the Arabic word 'jidār,' meaning wall, which is used locally to refer to ancient monumental ruins. These pre-Islamic tombs are situated on hilltops in the Frenda area, south of Tiaret city. The size and commanding positions of the graves suggest they were constructed for royalty. The tombs are situated on two hills: Jabal Lakhdar, which has three sepulchers, and Jabal Arawi (also known as Ternaten), which has ten tombs. Over the centuries, these monuments have been plundered, resulting in their ruined state. The tombs were built directly onto the bedrock or with shallow excavation. The building materials included local limestone and sandstone, as well as recycled materials from nearby settlements and necropolises of earlier times.Visitors to Lejdar can explore the remnants of these ancient structures, imagining the vibrant life and culture that once thrived in this region. The site offers a unique opportunity to connect with Algeria's Berber heritage and appreciate the architectural skills of past civilizations. The surrounding landscapes provide a serene backdrop for exploring these historical monuments.
