Place Aissat Idir is a war memorial located in Mekla, Algeria, commemorating Aïssat Idir, a significant figure in Algeria's struggle for independence. Born in Mekla in 1915, Idir was a founder of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) and a key player in the Algerian War. He was a journalist.Idir's activism and dedication to the Algerian cause led to his arrest and imprisonment, during which he was tortured by French colonialists. He died in a military hospital in Algiers in 1959, becoming a martyr for the independence movement. The memorial stands as a tribute to his life, sacrifice, and contributions to Algeria's freedom.Today, Place Aissat Idir serves as a place of remembrance and reflection, honoring a local hero and reminding visitors of the sacrifices made during the Algerian War.
