Discover more about Palais de la culture et des arts

The Palais de la Culture et des Arts, located on Bd Hamou Boutlelis in Oran, is a prominent cultural center that plays a vital role in promoting Algerian arts and culture. Housed in a building that dates back to the early 20th century, originally built in 1920, it was known as La Maison du colon. The building initially served as the headquarters for agricultural services in Oran. In June 1930, it was inaugurated by Pierre Bordes, the governor of Algeria, during the centennial celebrations of French Algeria. The Palais showcases a mixed architectural style, blending Eastern and Western influences. The building's refined design includes an impressive facade adorned with decorative details typical of French colonial architecture, while also retaining traditional Algerian architectural elements. The architects Georges Wolff and Ernest J. Brunier designed it in the Art Deco style. The beautiful frieze at the top of the building represents agricultural work. The mosaic Mater Africa, covering 280 square meters, and two bas-reliefs of Bacchus and Ceres were created by the sculptor Fernand Belmonte. Since 1990, the Palais de la Culture has been housed in the building. After being closed for nearly a decade for renovations, it was reopened to the public in June 2022 by the Minister of Culture, Soraya Mouloudji. Today, the Palais de la Culture is a dynamic gathering place for art and culture enthusiasts, hosting art exhibitions, concerts, dance performances, film screenings, conferences, and seminars. Its diverse programming promotes both Algerian and international culture, providing a platform for local and foreign artists.
