Abdullah Bin Salem Mosque: A Testament to Oran's History

The Abdullah Bin Salem Mosque, located in the heart of Oran, Algeria, is more than just a place of worship; it's a symbol of the city's rich and complex history. Originally constructed as the Great Synagogue of Oran, also known as Temple Israélite, it was once the largest synagogue in Africa. Its story reflects the shifting demographics and cultural landscape of Oran over the centuries. Construction of the synagogue began in 1879, driven by the vision of Simon Kanoui, and took nearly four decades to complete. The building was completed in 1918 and designed in the Neo-Mudéjar and Moorish Revival styles, showcasing intricate details and a blend of architectural influences. The facade features two impressive towers, approximately 20 meters high, adorned with domes. Inside, the nave is supported by red marble columns, and the stained-glass panels feature the Seal of Solomon. Following Algeria's independence in 1962, the majority of Algerian Jews, who had been considered French citizens, relocated to France. In 1975, the building was converted into a mosque and renamed in honor of Abdullah ibn Salam, a 7th-century Jew from Medina who converted to Islam.
