History of Bir El Djir

From Rural Fringe to Urban Commune

Bir El Djir developed from the eastern hinterland of Oran rather than from the compact historic settlement around the old port and kasbah. Its name is associated with the local Arabic landscape vocabulary, although detailed popular explanations of the toponym vary. For much of its earlier history, the area was characterised by agricultural land and scattered settlement on the edge of the expanding city. Its later importance came from proximity to Oran, available land and transport routes, which encouraged the gradual conversion of the eastern fringe into a built-up suburban zone.
