Bey's Palace: A Glimpse into Oran's Ottoman Past

Bey's Palace, or Palais du Bey, stands as a prominent historical landmark in Oran, Algeria. This palace, dating back to the Ottoman era, offers a glimpse into the opulent past of the city. Built in the 18th century during Ottoman rule, specifically in 1792 by Mohamed El-Kébir, the Bey of Oran, it was intended to fortify and embellish the city after it was recaptured from Spanish control.The palace served as both the residence of the Bey (the Ottoman governor) and the administrative center of the province. Its architecture is a beautiful blend of Moorish and Ottoman styles, featuring intricate tile work, ornate wooden ceilings, and expansive courtyards. Over the centuries, the palace has witnessed various transitions, including the French colonial period, when it was repurposed for administrative and military functions after the French captured Oran in 1831. Despite these changes, many of its original architectural features were preserved.Following Algeria's independence in 1962, Bey's Palace was designated as a national heritage site. The Algerian government undertook restoration efforts, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
