Discover more about Fort of Santa Cruz

The Fort of Santa Cruz stands as a testament to Oran's rich and often turbulent past. Erected by the Spanish to protect the city from naval attacks, the fort's strategic position on Mount Murdjadjo provided an unparalleled vantage point. Its thick walls, constructed from stone and brick, stretch over two and a half kilometers, punctuated by robust towers. Within the fort, a central castle served as the residence for the Spanish governor. The fort has been the site of numerous battles. The Ottomans repeatedly attacked the fort, leading to expansions and reinforcements. In 1831, the French occupied Oran and took control of the fort. Today, the Fort of Santa Cruz is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the fort's ramparts, bastions, and casemates, offering a glimpse into the military architecture of the era. Close to the fort is the Chapel of Santa Cruz, featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary, a replica of Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. The chapel was built in commemoration of the end of a cholera epidemic in 1847, when the Bishop of Oran carried a statue of the Virgin Mary in procession, beseeching her to protect the city. Every year until Algeria's independence in 1962, a pilgrimage took place on Ascension Day, with people climbing the mountain to pay homage to the Virgin Mary. The fort and chapel offer a 360° view of Oran's bay, Mers-El-Kebir's bay, and the entire city.
