Martyrs Memorial: A Symbol of Algerian Independence

The Martyrs Memorial, locally known as Maqam Echahid, stands as a powerful and iconic symbol of Algeria's arduous struggle for independence. Inaugurated in 1982, on the 20th anniversary of Algeria's liberation, this impressive concrete structure commemorates the sacrifices made during the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962).The monument, designed by Algerian artist Bachir Yellès and constructed by a Canadian company, Lavalin, reaches a height of 92 meters (302 feet). It is composed of three stylized concrete palm leaves that rise skyward, joining at mid-height.
