Originally discovered by Berber tribes, the caves have served various purposes throughout history. Local farmers once used them to store produce due to the consistently cool temperature, while others sought refuge within the caves during times of conflict. During the Algerian War, it's rumored that the Mujahideen used the caves as a shelter. In 1953, the French Colonial Army filled one passage with concrete to prevent Algerian revolutionaries from transporting weapons to Morocco. Today, visitors can explore the reopened and restored cave system, marveling at the illuminated mineral deposits and unique formations. The caves maintain a cool temperature of around 13 degrees Celsius year-round, providing a refreshing escape. The site includes a long concrete staircase leading down to the main passage and several chambers with ceilings up to 18 meters high.
