The Porte du Santon, located in the Hai El Marsa district of Oran, is a historical gate that evokes the city's rich and complex history. Constructed in 1754 by the Spanish, it served as a crucial defensive structure, guarding Oran from potential threats originating from the mountains. The gate was erected at the foot of Murdjadjo Mountain on the road leading to the Fort of Santa Cruz. Known locally as Bab El Hamra, the Porte du Santon was part of a fort with two towers, securing the city from the mountain side.During that era, the port of Mers El Kébir was the primary harbor for both Oran and Tlemcen, connected to Oran by a road that ended at the Porte du Santon. Today, the Porte du Santon attracts tourists eager to explore Oran's cultural and historical heritage.
