Discover more about Severan Temple

The Severan Temple, also known as the Temple of the Severan Family, is a prominent landmark within the ancient Roman city of Cuicul, now Djemila. Constructed in the early 3rd century AD, the temple was dedicated by Alexander Severus in 229 CE to the Gens Septimia, the dynasty of the Severan emperors. This impressive structure is part of the Severan Forum, which also includes a forum and an arch, and marks one of Cuicul's most significant expansions beyond its original walls. The temple itself is elevated on a podium and features rows of massive Corinthian columns, showcasing the grandeur of Roman architectural design. Colossal heads of Emperor Septimius Severus and his wife, Julia Domna, were discovered within the temple and are now displayed outside the museum. The Severan Temple, along with the Arch of Caracalla, served as an imposing entrance to the city for those arriving from Setif. Today, visitors can explore the temple's ruins and marvel at the intricate stonework and majestic columns. The site provides an immersive experience, allowing one to visualize the vibrant life that once flourished in this ancient Roman colony. The temple's commanding presence, set against the backdrop of the surrounding hills, makes it a prime location for photography and contemplation.
