Beni Add Ain Fezza Caves: A Subterranean Spectacle

The Beni Add Ain Fezza Caves, also known as the Grotte des Ain Beni Add, are located near the town of Aïn Fezza, approximately 10 kilometers east of Tlemcen, in western Algeria. These caves, a significant natural and historical site, offer visitors a mesmerizing journey into the depths of the earth. Discovered by Berber tribes thousands of years ago, the caves have served various purposes throughout history. Local farmers once utilized their consistently cool temperatures for storing produce. During the Algerian War of Independence, the caves served as a refuge for the Mujahideen, until the French colonial army discovered and blocked a passage with concrete to prevent the transport of revolutionaries and weapons to Morocco. This blocked passage is still visible today. Reopened to the public in July 2006 after extensive restoration, the Beni Add Ain Fezza Caves showcase a breathtaking display of geological artistry. Visitors descend via a long concrete staircase into a main passage, leading to several chambers adorned with stunning stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and cave pearls. The main hall features a remarkable collection of stalagmites, with ceilings reaching up to 18 meters high. The caves maintain a constant temperature of around 13°C (55°F) year-round, providing a refreshing escape from the Algerian heat. The cave system extends approximately 700 meters, with depths reaching 57 meters. The intricate mineral formations, combined with carefully placed lighting, create an otherworldly atmosphere, enchanting photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. Local legends suggest the cave system extends far beyond its known limits, possibly connecting to other underground networks, adding to the site's mystique. While visiting, be aware that the road to the caves is narrow and requires careful driving. Despite the lack of extensive infrastructure, the natural beauty and historical significance of the Beni Add Ain Fezza Caves make them a must-see destination in the Tlemcen National Park.
